Karlovy Vary (Carlsbad) is situated in the western part of the Czech Republic in the hilly area of Krusne Hory Mountains, close to the border with Germany. Click here to see the location of Karlovy Vary (about 130 km from Prague).

There are a number of ways how to get to Karlovy Vary:

By air:

International flights arrive at the Prague international Airport. From there you can take the coach to Karlovy Vary. Student Agency coaches (yellow buses) leave from the central bus station Praha Florenc and stop at the Prague Airport, to continue to Karlovy Vary. Coaches leave the airport between 7am and 10pm every full hour. You can check the timetable, book and pay the ticket online. If you are not sure how long it takes you to reach the arrival hall (as your plane may be delayed) there is a Student Agency office in the arrival hall of Terminal 1, where and you can book and pay the ticket. The journey to Karlovy Vary takes about 1 hour 45 minutes. One way ticket CZK 160 (= approx. EUR 6.50).

You can buy your ticket for Student Agency buses:

  • in the arrival hall of Terminal 1, or
  • at the driver when boarding the bus.

The Student Agency coaches are very comfortable, with wi-fi and the price includes also extra service on board. Free hot drinks to all passengers; cold drinks and refreshments can be bought on board (drinks and refreshments according to the current offer). All Yellow coaches are equipped with spacious, leather seats for your comfort, the seats can be positioned according to your needs.Toilets on board. Stewardess or steward is at your disposal throughout the journey; you can approach them with any question or request, they speak English. They will be happy to bring you drinks, refreshments, or newspapers. Free WiFi internet available on board.

By coach:

Frequent coach service is available between Prague and Karlovy Vary. Coaches leave from the central bus station Praha Florenc in central Prague, just one metro stop from Prague Hlavní nadrazi (Main Railway Station). Yellow Student Agency coaches leave between 6.30am and 9.30pm every 60 minutes. You can check the timetable, book and pay the ticket online. There is also a Student Agency office at the bus terminal and you can book and pay the ticket there. The journey takes about 2 hours 15 minutes (via the Prague International Airport). One way ticket CZK 160 (= approx. EUR 6.50). Coaches are very comfortable, with wi-fi and the price includes also extra service on board, please see above.

By rail:

Duration of the travel from Prague Hlavní nadrazi (Main Railway Station) to Karlovy Vary is approx. 4 hours. Express trains from westbound areas such as Paris, Nürnberg and Stuttgart arrive at Schirnding-Marktredwitz-Cheb railway border crossing. Change in Cheb for a direct local train to Karlovy Vary. Duration of the travel is approx. 1 hour.

Note that there is also a Comfortable Deutsche Bahn IC Bus connection between Prague’s Main Railway Station and Nürnberg, Münich and Mannheim several times daily.

By car:

The highway network links Prague with major border crossings of surrounding countries and is the easiest way to get to Prague and continue to Karlovy Vary on R6/E48 main road. Direction is well marked. The travel distance between Prague and Karlovy Vary is approx. 130 kilometres and journey can take around 2 hours. When arriving from western direction use any of the nearby border crossings. Thermal Hotel (conference venue in Karlovy Vary) offers parking at an extra charge.

How to get from the Prague Airport to the city centre:

By public transportation:

  • Bus No 119 to metro line A (24 minutes) or Bus No 100 to metro line B (18 minutes). You need to buy the tickets in advance (not possible in the bus!), the tickets are available at the public transportation kiosk in the airport arrival hall.
  • Airport Express Bus to Prague Hlavní nadrazi (Main Railway Station) and metro line C (35 minutes). Tickets are available at the public transportation kiosk in the airport arrival hall (open 7am till 10pm) or at the bus driver (currently 60 CZK).

CEDAZ airport shuttle bus: Regular shuttle bus transportation between Prague Airport and the city centre ("V Celnici" street, in front of the Czech Airlines terminal, 50 m from Republic Square - náměstí Republiky, close to hotels Hilton Prague Old Town and Marriott).The buses leave the airport in 30 minutes intervals, operating between 7.30am and 7pm.The shuttle costs CZK 150 per person (about 25 minutes trip).

AAA Taxi: operating 24 hours a day, fixed price at 28 CZK / 1 km, payment cash in Czech crowns or by credit card. For possible payments in Euros please check the exchange rate first. For your info: the current (March 2014) exchange rate is 1 EUR = 27 Czech Crowns (CZK). AAA taxi’s offer their services (alongside with the ’111 radiocabtaxi‘ company’s) directly in front of the arrival halls of Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. AAA taxis can also be ordered at the AAA dispatcher information kiosks located directly in arrival halls of Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. In the latter case the taxi driver will come forward to you to the kiosk to pick you up for the trip.
